You spin me right round

Posted By on May 19, 2014

So, over the weekend I took the plunge and rather than put some stuff on bobbins ply it and marvel at how it didn’t go as far as I though, I decided to try filling the bobbins as much I could.

I’ve been working short draw, eg you hold fluff in 1 hand and inch out literally the next bit.. Needless to say it’s actually quite slow going when it’s literally inch by inch.

So, I’ve tried long draw, now, this as it suggests is not inching it out but, you support the yarn where you would have inched it out and then pull your back hand backwards instead of the front hand forwards and pull it a long way back, this is known as long draw.. Now, it took me most of the weekend to fill 1 bobbin which was mainly short draw, the second I did this evening in mostly long draw. So, clearly faster. Now, I know the first bobbin is holding 140g of single spun thread the second I have t weighed.. But it looks fairly fat, of course the length if yarn on each will not be identical. Just because I wow my thickness varied.

So, my intention is to make 1 more fat bobbin and then ply all 3 together to make a nice rounded yarn. Hopefully.

Spinning lesson

Posted By on May 8, 2014

Today I had a spinning lesson in newent, run in a lovely wool shop called the wool garden. http://www.thewoolgarden.co.uk I need to assure you, that the principal of spinning as a concept is reasonably simple, take a few fibres and twist to make them stronger, constantly adding a fibre or two as they run out to make a continuous thickness…

In practice though it’s more like patting your head and rubbing your tum and tapping a tune with your foot.

Foot needs to tap to make the wheel go around. On it’s own, this isn’t specifically hard. Although you don’t want it to go too fast otherwise when you come to do the hand parts it could feel like it’s running away from you, obviously too slow and it would take a week to make much and not have enough momentum to all the way round…

You need one hand to hold the fluff and let it out, again, not so hard.

The other hand stops the twist by holding into it and making sure there’s enough twist and then letting it on the bobbin… Not that hard by itself.

However, the moment you are staring at one thing one of the others stops working right, it’s like carrying drinks, whichever hand you aren’t looking at slops.

Keeping the foot going enough to keep the wheel going, while hour hands say find a stubborn bit and remembering then to stop your foot..

Anyway, I just need to promise you, it sounds sound in theory, and fairly simple. Doing is a definitely different kettle of fish. If you twist it too much it goes a bit hard, not enough and it falls apart, but how much twist is the right amount? Good question. It’s a moving target.

So, you take some raw sheep wool, and brush it till it’s fluffy as can be, tool it up, and call it a rolag, the roll bit I get roll-ag? Meh, ok. I promise you if spinning was invented today, it wouldn’t have these names.

Once you have at least one rolag, you can look to attach it to your bobbin which you do via a leader, or, a pre done bit of wool or string, you then use a loop at the end to stuff a wisp of your fluff through, and peddle, once there’s enough twist to stop it pinging undone, you give it more fluff and let it move the now twisted bit on, and repeat.

See, sounds simple enough doesn’t it???

I do wholly recommend having a lesson, as while spinning has few absolutes, the last thing you want go do is discover you’ve been committing sins of the trade and that every spinner would shun you because you did it.

I had had a bit of a go as you may have read, but, I found it hard to believe in making the single thread fine enough, so that if plyed it wouldn’t make a tow rope for the QE2 ( big big ship)

I need to get me some carders, which it have ordered now, so, posted this before I was done, oops.

Here you see 2 rolags made by my teacher as she made them while I was spinning, and my 2 ply yarn I made today. It looks quite uneven in this photo, but I assure you face to face to looks pretty good. Even if I say so myself.

You know how we all love getting parcels in the post. Well.

Ok, here you see 2 cones of cashmere 500g each.

10 balls of wool

20140507-142829.jpg
200g of roving from the roving club I joined

20140507-142834.jpg
Some “angelina fibres” or sparklies to you and me, which you can mix in with stuff to add a bit of sparkle to your yarn.

20140507-142839.jpg
Finally! this football looking thing is 500g of white roving. I actually got 4 of these, so I can experiment a bit

So. HELP!

Posted By on May 7, 2014

OK Im a quarter of the way up, therefore, if Im going to do a centre peice I need to decide on it. NOW.

I have recalculated the number of diamonds, and redrawn allowing for the fact each row was 2 rows, so this is demonstrated in the latest pic

base

So, this is what it would look like if I just do 3 more lots of what I’ve done, I think you’ll agree its nice but I think its a bit busy. Problem is picking something for the middle

bedspread_question

So, here Ive sectioned out a square in the centre. Makes everything very square, but, it needs something in it.. but what?

After a lot of painstaking effort, I tried a circule in the middle, break the squares look, but, a) getting it central is seriously hard, b) I still need something in it!  can you help?

I thought of an 8 pointed star of some form, but, it just sounds a bit “meh” ..

Please, please help!

Washing the black fleece

Posted By on May 5, 2014

So, as I mentioned to a few people the colour of the washing water was “dark coffee” I don’t think they really believed me, now, the following two pictures aren’t great quality, but one shows some what I thought was cleaner sections of the fleece and some I wasn’t ready to try yet. Mainly as it looks like poo tipped fleece!!

Massive fluff!

Posted By on May 1, 2014

So, I washed some of my black fleece Monday? Weekend? Bah, seems ages back, anyway, been waiting for it to dry.

I thought it was all dry, it was not…

Let’s just say clearly the lump of fluff I picked put the bag was from the back end of the sheep as my washed bit had a nice clump of poop attached to it. Quite glad I saw that before putting it through my drum carder.

Now, I know I didn’t do you a picture of the washed fluff, sorry, but I did take it at 3 core stages, on the drum, off the drum, and after I span it all.. It’s actually surprising how much fluff a handful is right?

Getting better

Posted By on April 30, 2014

I don’t have a picture today of half my experiment which was to wash some of my black fleece before spinning it, I have been dreading this as perfectly good fluff could turn into toy stuffing or worse if you don’t get it right.

Well, I think I needed a bit more work on the process, and yesterday’s bit is still drying somehow… It’s not that thick! But it still felt damp, but it combed it out and played with my drop spindle and was pleased with how it came out although there was some pilling…. So, clearly room for improvement

I was finishing up the roving I got with my spindle on my wheel. Definitely getting better at the drawing of the fluff to make a more even single and, it’s way less super twisted, but I know from my previous plying that a lot comes out so, now I probably don’t have enough twist.. But hey, it’s the learning process right.

20140430-235302.jpg

Someone wisely said if you didn’t make mistakes you would never learn.

I still am finding it really hard to treddle a single treddle wheel and keep an eye on my hands. So, I am find it easier to spin the wheel with one hand, and treat it like a sideways drop spindle… Only I would find that easier!!!

No prizes but im proud of it

So, my first “hank” it’s short, it’s not even, it has issues, but this was made from my first go on a spindle and my first go on a wheel, so frankly the fact it made anything is pretty much a an A* it’s about 11yds long, but hey, better than spit in your eye

And now for something completely different

Posted By on April 12, 2014

Having been away from my blanket knitting, it’s hard to get back into a routine where it’d an hour plus per row, that’s without furry interruptions, drinking tea or bio breaks.. So frankly it’s hard to do for a long period of time, and almost like any exercise when you’ve had a break from it, it’s hard to get going.

Someone on reddit and I were talking of fingerless mitts.. And being me the ever cold, I thought, well DUH make some for work! As my hands do get cold, but I need my fingers to type with, and sure I could do fingerless gloves but there’s so much extra work. So, I made this this morning, and about. Third of the other this evening.

In essense it’s a tube with a hole for the thumb. Nothing more complex than that. The palm side is stockinette, I thought a cable on the back would make it more interesting to look at.

The jumper on it’s intended victim

Posted By on April 11, 2014

So, ex hubby dropped round, so I managed to persuade him to put his jumper on and let me take a photo..MIT does look better on than flat, I should point out the neck is deliberately large and floppy looking, he doesn’t like things against his neck.

I’m glad to say he says he likes it
