double knitting

Posted By on June 25, 2013

So. Here’s the pattern and my produce. Yes. There is a mistake on the white side the bottom right curl and on the black bottom left curl I got a stitch wrong. Bite me.

The cast on was a crap one but sufficient for this test.

I was not pleased with how the pattern shows or rather doesn’t show that well.

The pattern came from the book. It has a lot of repetitive and patterns and motifs specifically for knitting so the fact this doesn’t show well is annoying. However some of the repetitive more simple patterns should work. Also the same seems to be true for this as with the Tunisian intarsia which is single stitches on their own are weak and don’t show up as well.

What do you think?

mosaic knitting

Posted By on June 23, 2013

As you can see from the cover this book is about making some really nice mosaic like shapes all the ones on the outside are motifs the inside has man repeating ones which would be great to do blankets in with maybe the motifs in odd places.

However how she explains to make it seems the most bizarre

Let’s say your motif is stupid simple and consists of
OOOOXXXX
XXXXOOOO

Where say x is a dark colour and o light.

So how is this worked?

Well you would start say with the dark colour. Slip 4. Knit 4. Turn round. Purl 4 slip 4.

Ok. So you did 2 rows of dark. Yes. You read that right. You do the first row twice in dark

you then do 2 rows of light. So here you are thinking easy knit 4 slip 4 turn slip 4 purl 4

Nope

Yes exactly. You’re wondering wtf right now. As am I

No. You do the second row in light. Eg. Slip 4 cos the should be dark and knit 4 turn purl 4 slip 4

So how in hell does the light get to thw first but at the bottom. If for example you repeated the pattern the next row is dark. The one after light. So at no point have we knitted any of the stitches on the right hand of our tiny swatch

This is loony. The patterns should be ace for standard strand knitting or even double knitting but these instructions don’t make logical sense as some stitches for example if our swatch was to then reverse so you get little alternating rectangles you would then need to knit 4 slip 4 slip 4 purl 4. At this point you finally knit the right hand side but those cast on stitches have to span 4 rows!

Now in case you didn’t believe me. Please read the instructions and ok you need the pattern. Let me add that. So. Now. You read those instructions and tell me where I went wrong. Because you clearly work row 1 twice in dark and then row 3 twice in light! Wtf!

The second shawl grows again

Ok I added a tape measure for perspective of size this time. As you can see suddenly it looks so small. Yes. That’s inches but even so. As I said. I’ve sewn with thicker stuff than this. Its certainly not going to be a wear for warmth thing now is it. However I do think its lovely. I wonder what I will do with it once I finish it as well I’m not really the dainty type

shawl 2 grows

Shawl grew. I tried 2 colours I thought would work for a double knitted baby blanket. While they seemed strong enough contrasts in the bag. Wasn’t the case in use. Sigh.

another shawl

Posted By on June 16, 2013

So. Oddly I am choosing to make another shawl. Only this one is with cobweb weight wool. Heck I’ve sewen with thicker thread!

I am probably using far too small a needle by most standards but I’m liking how its turning out.

Next up I think is a double knitted blanket. Problem is I’m a bit nervous of taking on the size of project I want to do. I want to make of course a large double aided blanket. Why have it easy when you can take the challenge by the balls right? I think I should do some form of practice piece first though.

My birthday pressie to me

OK, so its a couple of weeks early, but, go me I bought myself some of Lucy Neatby’s DVDs she has a great sense of humour and is a pleasure to learn from. You can find her DVDs at http://www.lucyneatby.com you can either buy them or download them at a cheaper price! (YAY) She has 17 DVDs for sale, each sound great, although the doll one isnt my cup of tea.

She also talks on her web of a knitters club for double knitting which sounds like it should be amazing!

My first finished continentally knitted socks. Made with the aid of a stitch holder for the cables courteous of my late ex father in law from whom I have been kindly given his crafty stuff.

For those who had noticed, my website fell off the face of the earth for a small period yesterday or so, this was due to some technical dull issues I wont bore you with but, could have been avoided, and easily solved with access to the right logs.. which I didnt have.

I have a few posts to do now which will catch you up with what Ive been up to!

good news yarn lovers

Well, its not the best news but its a good step in the right direction. www.redheart.co.uk has arrived. sadly there is no online shop for us Brits or the Germans on their site yet but maybe it will come. by the looks of it here in England its a reduced range being sold by sainsburys

finished

Ok. Its hard to see how much this grew. But go with me. I should have put a tape measure down yes I know. But a before and after. It probably would have stretched a lot more. But as you can see a double bed was nearly not big enough

I have some blocking wires coming in the post. As it seems the uk doesn’t sell them. But I hadn’t realised just how much this could grow. How in hell do you cope with sizing and this!

Oh. And why do wool jumpers shrink. But this grows?4
